When you’re stuck in the hospital recovering from injury from a medical malpractice or auto accident injury, it can get a bit boring after a day or two. You’ll get to know the routines of the doctors, nurses, and staff checking on you, which provides a little break from the monotony. But besides any family and friends visiting you, you’ll find you have a lot of time on your hands.
This blog will look at a few ideas to pass the time while you’re recovering. Here are some enjoyable tasks to try in the hospital.
Try a Crossword or Other Puzzles. Stimulate your mind with sudoku, crosswords, hidden word searches, or other puzzles. Games like memory matching and word searches help stimulate neural connections and keep your brain sharp. In fact, a 2022 study found crossword puzzles to be particularly effective in improving memory.
Binge a Show. Is there a streaming series you keep meaning to watch but don’t have the time? Well, you have the time now. If you’re on your own device, make sure you have your charger and extension cord (It’s also something to ask for if someone’s wondering what they can bring you).
Address Life Administration. You need to set up a time to see your financial planner, find a plumber to install the new kitchen faucet, and find a ballet school for your daughter. You could use some of your idle hospital time to check off some of the items from your to-do list. These might also include canceling unused subscriptions and memberships, culling through the photos and apps on your phone, or planning a getaway when you’re out of the hospital!
Try to Learn a New Skill. Always wanted to learn French? With lots of online classes and tutorial videos, you can being to teach yourself that language you always wanted to learn while you’re recovering.
Read a Book. A good book is a terrific way to help pass time. Maybe try something different, like a nonfiction book to educate yourself about an event in history, or a biography of a famous person. You could also find a novel and use your imagination to paint the scene. Plus, there are plenty of audiobooks you can find online if you’d rather just listen to a good story.
Write a Book. Okay, you might not have time to draft the great American novel, but this can be a great way to pass the time. Recording your thoughts may allow you to release some stress and be creative. You could start a journal about your hospital stay or author a short story.
Put on Some Tunes. Access your music app and sing along to cheer up everyone on your floor! Okay, maybe use your inside singing voice. Elton John said that “Music has healing power.,” so listen to the Rocket Man and enjoy your play list.
Listen to a Podcast. Along those same lines, try a podcast. Maybe your favorite comedian has an interview you’d like to hear. Or, learn something new about history, baking, wellness, or you name it. Currently, there are 4.25 million podcasts worldwide, so you should be able to find a few of interest.
Make a Call. Catch up with your cousin in Tennessee or your old classmate from high school. An engaging conversation will make you both feel better.
