The National Medical Malpractice Advocacy (NMMAA) is an advocate for social justice that empowers the community through education and activism. With active patient advocates throughout the United States, the NMMAA helps to educate citizens.

What Does the NMMAA Do?
The NMMAA has helped hundreds of victims across the country in areas of nursing home abuse, medical negligence, 10-day rules, and COVID-19 related issues.
For instance, the NMMAA has written numerous complaints on hospital, nursing home issues, and COVID-19 related issues. Its lobbying arm has bill history and bipartisan support on “Cancel the Cap” legislation. Specifically, its lobbying efforts in Louisiana were instrumental in informercials and campaign ads regarding “Tort Reform.” HB 586 and SB 503 are bills affording relief to the most severely injured citizens of the State of Louisiana from medical malpractice.
The History of the NMMAA
The NMMAA was founded in 2013 by a group of individuals who personally were victims or knew someone who was a victim of medical malpractice. It was created with the thought that everyone has the right to life and to have justice served when they’ve been harmed by others. From its start, the NMMAA has worked to raise awareness and petition for change. The organization has faced the reality that frequently justice isn’t served for the victims of those harmed by medical negligence.
The NMMAA is the first non-partisan civil rights organization of its kind with patient advocates throughout the United States. The organization dedicates itself as a national network to end medical malpractice through partnerships with local and national organizations across America.
The NMMAA is the first and only organization that has received numerous proclamations from all over the U.S. for its advocacy related to medical malpractice. In addition, the NMMAA has received the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is given to the rare individual who has completed more than 4,000 hours of service over the course of their life. This award recognizes the accomplishments of the National Medical Malpractice Advocate Association in civil and social rights advocacy.
How Do They Advocate for Patients?
The NMMAA has been faced with challenges in the area of medical malpractice. Although it’s made some steps through education, legislation, and grassroots efforts, it’s still an overwhelming task if they don’t ask for assistance from the community. Advocacy is a tool that will advance its mission, empower supporters, foster debate and discussion, and help to uncover solutions for this significant issue.
Advocacy helps the organization address the systemic causes of medical malpractice not the symptoms. The NMMAA advances to promote changes that address the underlying causes of medical malpractice in our country. They are dedicated in ensuring that those of less power have their voices heard. The association has seen that public officials often don’t know the complete picture of how their policies are affecting the community; however, the NMMAA has found some successful innovations and initiatives that can ultimately change the face of medical malpractice.
